This week’s practice kit
Four blocks ≈ 32 min. Talk less than 10 seconds between games. Water after block 2.
1. Body Part Dribble
7 min
Warm-up · listening · close control
Kids dribble in a small grid. You call a body part (knee, elbow, belly, nose). They stop the ball with that part, then go again.
Setup: 15×20 yd. 1 ball each. Disc cones optional.
Coach:
- Demo once — then play
- Ball close enough to stop on the call
- Praise quick reactions, not pretty form
2. Red Light / Green Light
7 min
Stops & starts · both feet
Green = dribble fast. Yellow = slow, tiny touches. Red = foot on ball. After a minute, let them invent a new color.
Setup: Same grid. Optional colored pinnies as signals.
Coach:
- Sole of the foot to stop
- Heads up — no crashes
- Lots of green to burn energy
3. Gates Dribble
8 min
Turns · vision · own-score race
Scatter cone gates. 20–30 seconds: how many gates can you dribble through? Reset. Beat your own number.
Setup: 8–12 gates (2 cones, ~2–3 yd). More gates than kids.
Coach:
- Gate → gate (no camping)
- Both feet when you can
- Short rounds keep attention
4. 3v3 to the end line
10 min
Free play closer · no GK · no positions
Small field. Score by dribbling or kicking over the end line (or into cone goals). US Youth Soccer: no such thing as a ball hog here.
Setup: ~20×25 yd. 2v2 / 3v3 / 4v4 by numbers. Extra balls on the side.
Coach:
- Minimal stoppages — let them play
- Cheer dribbles into open space
- Rotate quiet kids onto the ball
Age lens · U6 mentality
What 5–6 year olds actually are
Short attention. Egocentric (“my ball”). Learn by watching, not lectures. Psychologically easy to bruise. Full speed until they drop — then need a water break.
- One instruction at a time · demonstrate
- Swap activities every ~5–8 minutes
- Every child a ball most of practice
- Praise effort; skip harsh correction
- Zero formations / tactics boards
U7–U8 contrast (not tonight)
Same fun-first rule, but they can start simple partner tasks, shielding, and short gate-passing. Save MOJO’s U8 set and Cal South pairs retrieval for later — don’t force it on week-one U6.
Expert watch
Skip / noise
Leave on the shelf
Agility ladders, parachutes, elimination “last kid wins,” long lines, and adult 11v11 tactics boards. At U6 they cut touches and kill joy. Cones + balls + small goals are enough.
